Best Movies of 2018

source
Another list that I am SUPER late with but here it is! I didn’t see a ton of movies this year as I wanted to but listed here are the ones I thought stood out the most that I saw.
Honorable Mentions: Ready Player One, Crazy Rich Asians, Annihilation, Ant-Man and the Wasp
10. Bumblebee
bumblebee-2
I haven’t reviewed this yet and I don’t know if I will, but I thought this was very good. I was surprised. I don’t care for any of the Transformers movies. I think I’ve only see the first two, but I really enjoyed the adventure, but I was also really into the friendship (also seemed a little romantic lol) that bloomed between Charlie and Bumblebee which was shocking to me. I also very much enjoyed the action. Yes, be shocked people lol.
9. Love, Simon
love-simon-grid-uproxx
I very much enjoyed this movie. I even teared up at the end. Nick Robinson did a very good job in this role. Simon is so likable, and you root for him throughout the movie. Unlike the book where I hated some characters, I generally liked everyone (all the main characters) in the movie. It’s a nice teen, coming of age movie for those who may be in the same struggle as Simon.
8. Sorry to Bother You
sorry
I haven’t reviewed this yet and I do plan on it, but this movie is bonkers. I mean, I really liked it. I think it’s one of those you either “love it” or you “hate it” because it’s weird. I get the message, I like the quirkiness of it and I thought it was handled in a very original way. Great movie experience.
7. The Incredibles 2
incrediles2-poster-crop-frontpage-700x304
Something we’ve been waiting for for years! I don’t think it’s better than the first one but it’s a nice follow up. I loved seeing the Parr family again and I loved seeing Elastigirl really use her powers because she’s awesome. The story is interesting, the characters are STILL likable, and the action and adventure aspect is so much fun!
6. Avengers: Infinity War
5a1eb89d3339b0962f8b459e-750-323
I haven’t seen it again in a while, but this movie really kicked me in the stomach. It was great seeing 10 years of MCU movies come to a head in this film. I think the direction was handled well since there were so many characters in this film to juggle. I thought it could have been a mess, but it wasn’t. I do think there was some issues which doesn’t put it in the Top 5 of my MCU movies (at least right now it doesn’t) but it’s Sooooo worth it.
5. Mission Impossible: Fallout
mission-impossible-fallout-again
This movie is dope! I love the Mission Impossible movies and Ethan Hunt is awesome! Shoot, the Avengers need to let him help them take down Thanos lol. It’s because of these movies that I know spy movies don’t necessarily HAVE to be convoluted. Fallout is so much fun, you get to see Tom Cruise RUN LIKE A CHAMP! Plus, Henry Cavill was also great in it and we got to see the best moment ever.source
4. A Quiet Place
a_quiet_place_still_1
Anyone who knows me knows I don’t like horror films. I know that “horror” is a wide genre so there are smaller umbrellas of horror I would enjoy (like I want to see Happy Death Day 2 U) and this was one of those I really wanted to see. I would consider it more of a thriller than anything but it’s one of those movies where you MUST watch since it’s so quiet. It forces you to be quiet and pay attention. I think all the acting is very good and the use of sound and music in the film is top notch. Great directorial debut by John Kransinski and of course Emily Blunt is always a win.
3. The Hate U Give
1*wrgztzd-130icdwrf3mv8q
Based on the bestselling novel of the same name. It is a great book adaptation and I think the movie was well done. The acting, the story and the passion behind it was all handled very well and it shows. Sure, it’s a little different from the book but it’s still very good. Amandla Stenberg was great and powerful as Starr Carter and the story hits so close to what has been happening with black people and police. Very relevant.
2. Black Panther
null
I mean what can I say? It’s Black Panther. I argued for a while if this will be my number one movie and I settled with it here. It is such a win for black superheroes, for black nerds, for black people and for people in general. The story may be familiar, but I think you can tell there was love behind it. I mean, the costumes, the musical score, it’s funny and it has a lot of emotional moments that are totally earned. Plus, my husband is in it and he killed that villain role! Everyone in this movie DID that.
1.  Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
spiderman-intospiderverse-intlposter-frontpage-700x290
Listen, if you have not seen this movie and you’re a Spider-man fan then what is wrong with you? This is THE BEST Spider-Man movie (fight me) and I’m so glad that Miles Morales is at the helm in this. I love Peter Parker, I have and always will love Peter Parker but this movie having Miles as the lead was a smart move because it follows the message of the movie… anyone can be behind the mask if you let go. The animation is beautiful, the music is used well in the film, the action is so good, the characters are ALL interesting, I mean there are a lot of characters and they all get their time to shine. Miles is a fully realized character and if you don’t know much about him going into the movie, then I reckon you’ll love him by the end. This was such a great movie experience and I recommend for any Spider-Man fan to go out and watch this one.

Worst Movies of 2017

442911-286396

With every Best of the Year list, there has to be a worst list.
The first part consists of the movies that I didn’t get the chance to see that I heard were terrible and that looked terrible that I didn’t get around to see them. I don’t normally see movies I don’t want to see, but I try to see movies in general so I can have a variety of things, but it just happens where I don’t get to everything.
Bad Movies I Didn’t See but wanted to:
The Mummy, Fifty Shades Darker, Underworld: Blood Wars, Transformers: The Last Knight, Unforgettable, The Dark Tower, The Circle, Flatliners, Snatched, All Eyez On Me, Rough Night, Ghost in the Shell, Kidnap… I could go on but I’m going to stop lol. There were a lot of movies, I meant to watch but never got around to it.
Dishonorable Mentions:
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, Atomic Blonde, Murder on the Orient Express, Justice League, The Book of Henry, Monster Trucks, The Great Wall, Fist Fight,
Worst Movies of the Year:
These are the movies I saw this year that I consider to be among the worst.
10. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
pirates_of_the_caribbean_dead_men_tell_no_tales_by_mintmovi3-db23j4w
So I ultimately enjoyed watching this, but it has a lot of flaws. The story, how the villains are handled, how the characters are handled. I think it could have been a great experience, but there were a lot of stupid details, characters saying stupid things, the dialogue was really bad at times. The climax was also very lame.
9. Sleepless
350183_original
How can you make Jamie Foxx, a charismatic actor, whisper, grunt and seethe the entire time. The story is dumb, the climax is dumb and while there are some good things in it, such as the acting and the two action scenes, everything else, the son’s acting, the villains… I just didn’t buy any of it. Dumb.
8. The House
butcherburnerThis movie was supposed to be funny and while it has funny things, it doesn’t have many laughs throughout. It has a lot of pacing issues, and it’s very similar to everything we’ve seen before. The premise is interesting but it doesn’t add anything new.
7. Beaches
beaches-1200x520
This movie was supposed to be good. Unfortunately, it’s not. The acting isn’t bad, at least not from Nia Long and Idina Menzel, but they did not handle the story well. They didn’t allow us to really see how the friendship was built and lasted throughout their years. They rushed over the important parts of their lives. Ugh, it was so upsetting. The music was also very forgettable and you have IDINA MENZEL and you have forgettable songs. Lame.
6. The Space Between Us
bssng79tqimkf8iyofpz
Again, the acting isn’t bad but the characters are STUPID. They’re all cardboard cut outs of cliche people. The story is super stupid and doesn’t make any sense, characters make super stupid choices. Again, HOW CAN AN ASTRONAUT MAKE IT TO SPACE WITHOUT PASSING ALL TESTS!!!! So dumb. The romance is fine but I don’t necessarily believe it.
5. Rock Dog
hero_rock-dog-2017
Stupid. The kids weren’t even interested in this movie. That should say a lot.
4. Baywatch
26baywatch1-facebookjumbo
It has it’s funny moments, the acting isn’t bad, but the characters aren’t very interesting outside of Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron’s characters. The supporting characters weren’t interesting, the humor didn’t always land, the visuals could also be pretty bad, especially in the scene with the fire and the boat. It was very unfocused and the villain, while a good actress, was a terrible villain.
3. Tulip Fever
tulip-fever
I really wanted to like this movie, it seemed really interesting but the whole “tulip” thing I thought ruined the movie. The acting isn’t bad, it’s good, the characters can sometimes be interesting, the side characters more so than the main ones. Again, characters also making really dumb decisions and character development was pretty nonexistent.
2. Collide
hero_collide-2017
This movie is terrible. All of the characters, all of them have no motivation for anything they do. The acting is fine, but I cannot imagine how any of these actors thought this script was legit when they read it. Something had to have changed by time they started filming. The action was lame, the romance was lame, the movie didn’t care about the growth of the romance so I didn’t. So dumb. It didn’t know what it wanted to be and the movie failed because of it.
1. CHIPS
Chips_04667.dng
I just watched this, and it’s terrible. I did not laugh once, wait I think I laughed maybe one time but otherwise, I did not laugh at all. There were points where it supposed to be funny and it wasn’t. The character should have been switched, I could not buy Michael Pena in his role, the action was lame, the climax was lame and the gross humor was not funny and I don’t think any of the characters were interesting. This movie was just plain stupid.
This is my list of the worst of the year. There are some dishonorable mentions and it took me a minute to decide between some of them but I had to pick them. I would love to hear your thoughts on the worst movies of the year! Let me know in the polls and in the comments below!

Best Movies of 2017

movie-of-the-year

So 2017 has ended… which means it’s time for the “Best of the Year” to be revealed. So many movies, and going back through, I watched a lot but I also feel like I missed a lot. Hopefully, I do better in 2018 with actually watching the movies I actually WANTED TO SEE IN THE FIRST PLACE! But this post will have a few treats for you.
First, I’m going to name a few honorable mentions that I heard were good but I didn’t see. I may see them before the 2018 Oscars, but I haven’t seen them as of this list.
Best Movies I Didn’t See (But wanted to):
War of the Planet of the Apes, Okja, Dunkirk, Lady Macbeth, The Breadwinner, The Shape of Water, Wind River, Your Name., Detroit, Mudbound, Marshall, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, All the Money in the World, I, Tonya, Molly Game’s, Blade Runner: 2049 (this one I won’t watch until I see the first one).
These next few movies were ones that I saw and loved, or really liked but they didn’t quite make the list. This does not mean they’re not as good as the ones actually on my list, it just means that they didn’t make it into the top 10. Click the titles and you can see my reviews for the movie.
Honorable Mentions:
Beauty and the Beast, Wonder, Hidden Figures, Girl’s Trip, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, The Red Turtle, Baby Driver, The Lego Batman Movie, John Wick: Chapter 2, Colossal.
Now without further ado, these are the movies that are my favorite of the year. This is my personal opinion and I’m sure everyone is not going to agree with me, but that’s okay. These movies were the ones that made a lasting impact on me and that I would consider my favorites and the best of the year. I reviewed all of the movies posted, so click the title and you can check out the reviews!
My Top 12 Best Movies of the Year:
I was gonna do just ten but then I forgot I saw Logan, and then I watched Call Me By Your Name and it was already hard enough to pick my list, so I decided to do 12. It’s my list. lol.
12. Sleight
hero_sleight-2017
Now, I don’t think this movie is like the best thing ever, but I was so shocked while I watched it that I couldn’t stop talking about it after. Movies that I might consider the best, will also be movies that affected me in a way that I can’t stop thinking about it. Jacob Lattimore was fantastic here, and I think he has a bright future ahead of him. The story is one we’ve seen before, but it has combined elements that make it unique. I think it’s a great watch. I really enjoyed it!
11. Wonder Woman
landscape-1489502614-wonder-woman-new-poster
This is a monumental movie for everyone. Seeing a female lead comic book movie, where the character is handled so well that she can stand on her, now that’s something special. Gal Gadot was very good as Diana, she had innocence, but she was strong and it was so cool watching the fight scenes. Chris Pine also stood out as Steve Trevor, he wasn’t just a love interest, he was a strong character who stood on his own as well. This movie is special and it was great watching it. The scene in No Man’s Land and in the little city were probably the best scenes in this film. Fantastic. It was also great seeing so many women kick ass on Themyscira.
10. Spider-Man: Homecoming
smhc_post_master
I had a lot of expectations to see Tom Holland take on this role in his own movie. In the 20 minutes that he was in Civil War, he was great and I was convinced. Seeing this movie, was like watching the animated cartoon or reading some of the comics. While I like the other two actors who have played this role, I think Holland manages to encapsulate the role with perfect balance of being both Peter and Spider-Man. This movie is also not about his origins, but more along the lines of how he became the hero we recognize. He is also a kid, so there is an innocence about him as well. Michael Keaton is also a great villain, he was an every man but he was scary. I very much enjoyed watching this movie and I can’t wait to see where they continue to go with this young character.
9. Split
split-2-unbreakable-samuel-l-jackson-mr-glass
I love James McAvoy, he is such a great actor. He plays five different characters that we actually see in this movie. Technically, I would have loved to see him play all of the personalities but I’ll take what I can get. There is a “twist” involved, and without the twist, it’s a fantastic movie, and I know for some, the twist will make or break the movie. The story is also very interesting in how it’s handled. Great movie.
8. The Disaster Artist
disaster-artist
A surprising movie that doesn’t make fun of the worst movie in the world, but tells the story behind that movie. It could have easily been a parody of Tommy Wiseau and The Room, but instead it talks about life in Hollywood, and how hard it is to make it out there. It’s funny for everyone, especially those who enjoy the spectacle of the movie it talks about. This is probably James Franco’s best acting, he’s so natural and it’s obvious that he’s having so much fun in this role but he also keeps it from bordering on the “ridiculous” but instead the human.
7. Thor: Ragnarok
thor_ragnarok_main
The best of the Thor franchise. It took a chance to not only have a serious nature, but to balance the comedic side of the Thor character. It allowed Chris Hemsworth to show that not only is he an actor star as this character, but that he is funny. We were introduced to Valkyrie who was great, Loki and Bruce Banner return as good and interesting characters. This is the first time we truly see Hulk living in the spotlight, even talking and having conversations. It’s big, it’s colorful and bold. This movie is a lot of fun and the music… oh man. Definitely the best of the Thor trilogy.
6. Logan
logan-movie-x-men-wolverine-car-2024-chrysler-e8-300-limousine-film-model-interior
I almost forgot about this, but this is the Wolverine movie we all wanted. It was great to see Hugh Jackman’s swan song in this role. It was Rated R, brutal, beautiful and emotional. I cried watching this movie. Not only was Hugh Jackman the best he’s been in this role, but Patrick Stewart, who also has been Professor Xavier for the same amount of time, was also the best he’s been in his role. Dafne Keene, was X-23 was a standout and I hope she goes on to do great things. It was sad to see him go but Logan is a movie that is the bow to a great character.
5. Call Me By Your Name
thumbnail_26685
I just watched this movie and my entire list imploded. This movie IS SO GOOD. Armie Hammer is definitely a standout in it, but Timothee Chalamet was also very good. The relationship that blossoms in this film, happens very organically, and it does touch on how it is to experience love for the first time. It was very realistic. I was glued to the screen. So good.
4. Get Out
hero_getout
A very surprising movie, taking a very interesting look at how black people are viewed. It does have a lot of interesting things to say, especially in the first two thirds of the film, and while I had my problems with the third act, I think this movie had some great acting, great direction by first time director Jordan Peele. and the imagery says a lot. This is definitely an experience that should be enjoyed by movie goers.
3. IT
59de99dddfa76-image
I do not generally like scary movies, but this movie is fantastic and I had a great time watching it. The acting from the young actors is so good, that I cannot wait to see what else they do, the story is great and while it was scary to me, I enjoyed how the fears played into the character growth of the young people. I can’t wait for Chapter 2.
2. Coco
coco-pixar
Pixar has done it again. A movie that celebrates a culture and family. Coco is an emotional roller coaster of a movie in which things are discovered, earned and lost. I cried watching this movie, the music is mostly memorable but the singing is all great.
1. Lady Bird
lady-bird
This movie felt like I was watching someone’s life. It felt so real and like a documentary that it can relate to anyone’s relationship with their mother. Now, I’m sure that everyone doesn’t have an exact copy of this relationship between mother and daughter, but there are parts that relate. An extraordinary movie, with fantastic acting.
I hope you enjoyed this list. Please let me know what you thought were some of the best movies of the year were down below!
