Movies

Anticipated Movies of 2020

Another list!! lol after this I swear, I’m done. For now. But here we are once again with a new year! Which means new content, new movies, new actors to fall in love with lol. This list is for the movies coming out in 2020 that I am super excited for. I will also have a list that will have movies that I’m not really anticipating but I probably will still go see.
I’m sure there is also going to be a lot of movies that pop up during the year that won’t be on this list but that’s fine because this list contains the movies that I know about.
I noticed while doing this that I have a ton of movies I’m not really anticipating. I’m not sure if it’s just nothing really grabbing me like in the last two years or what but I probably have way more movies I’m not really anticipating but I’ll see than the ones I’m actually looking forward to.
So, just like last year, I’m going to do my most anticipated movies by month.
January
February
Sonic the Hedgehog- Feb 14: A cop in the rural town of Green Hills will help Sonic escape from the government who is looking to capture him. Considering how the studio pushed back the movie in order to change Sonic’s look after everyone hated it, says a lot. I will go and see it because I’ve always liked Sonic and I want to see how it turns out.
The Photograph-Feb 14: A series of intertwining love stories set in the past and in the present. The trailer for this is lovely! Plus, I looove Lakeith Stanfield and I love Issa Rae! Black love stories! We need more of these! I really hope it’s written well.
Wendy- Feb 28: Lost on a mysterious island where aging and time have come unglued, Wendy must fight to save her family, her freedom, and the joyous spirit of youth from the deadly peril of growing up. I love Peter Pan and this trailer looks great. I think Peter is a little brown boy too! It follows Wendy more, which is fine, I just love the idea.
March
Onward- March 6: Set in a suburban fantasy world, two teenage elf brothers embark on a quest to discover if there is still magic out there. It’s Pixar, Tom Holland is a voice and it’s a brotherly adventure story… I always like those.
A Quiet Place Part II- March 20: Following the events at home, the Abbott family now face the terrors of the outside world. Forced to venture into the unknown, they realize that the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats that lurk beyond the sand path. The first one was fantastic, and the trailer looks great! I hope they manage to keep the same feeling from the first one.
Mulan- March 27: A young Chinese maiden disguises herself as a male warrior in order to save her father. A live-action feature film based on Disney’s ‘Mulan.’ Need I say anything more? I’m excited. The trailers were amazing. The most recent one was beautiful, I can’t wait!
April
Antebellum-April 24: Successful author Veronica finds herself trapped in a horrifying reality and must uncover the mind-bending mystery before it’s too late. This looks really good! There’s a mystery and I would like to know what’s going on!
May
Black Widow- May 1: A film about Natasha Romanoff in her quests between the films Civil War and Infinity War. I do think this movie came out too late considering her fate, but I’ll go see it because I enjoy Natasha and they never quite seemed to know what to do with her in some movies. Her best film was Winter Soldier and she never quite got to that level of usefulness again to me. So, I hope this film really goes out on a high note for her.
Scoob- May 15: Scooby and the gang face their most challenging mystery ever: a plot to unleash the ghost dog Cerberus upon the world. As they race to stop this dogpocalypse, the gang discovers that Scooby has an epic destiny greater than anyone imagined. I had no idea what this movie was going to be about, but I’m interested in the voice cast for the most part, I don’t really like Will Forte as Shaggy (Why not Matthew Lillard?) but I love Scooby Doo.
Fast & Furious 9- May 22: Plot unknown. The ninth installment of the ‘Fast and Furious’ franchise. Who cares what the plot is!? lol I mean, I like a good story, but I doubt anyone goes to these movies for that. I don’t mind having a good time with characters I mostly enjoy.
June
Soul- June 19: A musician who has lost his passion for music is transported out of his body and must find his way back with the help of an infant soul learning about herself. I thought the trailer was great. The inclusion of Jazz and Jamie Foxx’s voice fits so well so I’m into it. My only big problem is that this is the third time we get an animated black lead character, who gets turned into something that’s not human. I wish that would stop. I love that there are black leads but let them be a black human.
In the Heights-June 26: A feature version of the Broadway musical, in which a bodega owner has mixed feelings about closing his store and retiring to the Dominican Republic after inheriting his grandmother’s fortune. I know it’s a Broadway show that Lin Manuel-Miranda created, I hear it’s so good. I only listened to a bit of the cast recording which was great, so I’ll see this. Plus, it’s a musical, plus Anthony Ramos is in it and I love him. Now, I just need a feature film for Hamilton.
July
Ghostbusters Afterlife-July 10: When a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind. The trailer was really good, I’ve always liked Ghostbusters. I’m not a super fan or anything but I watch them whenever I catch them. So, I think this will be a nice continuation and homage.
Tenet- July 19: An action epic revolving around international espionage, time travel, and evolution. I saw one trailer for this movie, and it looked really cool! So, I will check it out.
August
Bill & Ted Face the Music- Aug 21: Once told they’d save the universe during a time-traveling adventure, 2 would-be rockers from San Dimas, California find themselves as middle-aged dads still trying to crank out a hit song and fulfill their destiny. I don’t care what the plot is, I’m going to see it! I LOVE BILL & TED and they’ve talked about this for so long! I cannot wait!
September
October
November
Eternals- Nov 6: The saga of the Eternals, a race of immortal beings who lived on Earth and shaped its history and civilizations. I don’t know anything about them from the comics, but the characters seem really interesting, it has a very interesting and diverse cast, plus it’s Marvel. So, lol.
December
West Side Story- Dec 18: An adaptation of the 1957 musical, West Side Story explores forbidden love, and the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. I LOVE the original film, so I’m interested to see how this is handled here.
The Croods 2- Dec 23: The prehistoric family the Croods are challenged by a rival family the Bettermans, who claim to be better and more evolved. I really liked the first one, so I’m excited!
Not really Anticipating but want to see:
January
Bad Boys for Life- Jan 17: The Bad Boys Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett are back together for one last ride in the highly anticipated Bad Boys for Life. The long waited third film to the Bad Boys franchise. I really enjoy both movies, I’m not really like pumped for this but the trailers look fun and I like Will Smith and Martin Lawrence together, their broship is great. So, sure I’m down.
Dolittle- Jan 17: A physician discovers that he can talk to animals. Just so people are clear, this is not a remake or a reboot of Eddie Murphy’s Dr. Doolittle. This is just another interpretation of the character mostly based on Rex Harrison’s version which came before Murphy’s. Just had to say it. But great cast so I’ll see it.
The Turning- Jan 24: A young governess is hired by a man who has become responsible for his young nephew and niece after the deaths of their parents. A modern take on Henry James’ novella “The Turn of the Screw”. Here is horror film number 2 since I want to see A Quiet Place (but I don’t quite count that). I don’t know if I’ll actually see it or not but I’m curious. Finn Wolfhard seems to be into doing horror material.
The Rhythm Section- Jan 31: A woman seeks revenge against those who orchestrated a plane crash that killed her family. A badass woman revenge film starring Blake Lively. I thought this was coming out in 2019 but I guess not. But sure, why not. There’s been Atomic Blonde, Peppermint, Anna, Red Sparrow… maybe this one will be better than those lol.
Gretel & Hansel- Jan 31: A long time ago in a distant fairy tale countryside, a young girl leads her little brother into a dark wood in desperate search of food and work, only to stumble upon a nexus of terrifying evil. This is a dark take on the fairy tale. I like Sophia Lillis and I like different takes on fairy tale stories soooo sure, why not.
February
Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)- Feb 7: After splitting with the Joker, Harley Quinn joins superheroes Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya to save a young girl from an evil crime lord. I’m not really into this film but I’ll go and check it out. I’m curious.
March
Bloodshot-Mar 13: Ray Garrison, a slain soldier, is re-animated with superpowers. It probably won’t be very good, but I enjoy Vin Diesel mostly, the trailer I just watched looked cool. So sure.
April
The Lovebirds – April 3: On the brink of breaking up, a couple gets unintentionally embroiled in a bizarre (and hilarious) murder mystery. As they get closer to clearing their names and solving the case, they need to figure out how they, and their relationship, can survive the night. A romantic comedy where the two leads are people of color and it’s a murder mystery as well… Issa Rae? Sure!
The New Mutants- April 3: Five young mutants, just discovering their abilities while held in a secret facility against their will, fight to escape their past sins and save themselves. I just want to see it, I don’t even care anymore lol. This is the third time this movie has my list! Just release it dammit!!
No Time to Die- April 8: Bond has left active service. His peace is short-lived when his old friend Felix Leiter from the CIA turns up asking for help, leading Bond onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology. I do not care about James Bond, maybe sometime down the line they’ll make me care but not right now. However, Rami Malek is the villain in this one so I shall watch it.
Trolls World Tour- April 17: Sequel to the 2016 animated hit. The first one was surprisingly cute so perhaps this one will be too.
May
The Personal History of David Copperfield- May 8. Based on the novel. Dev Patel is playing David Copperfield? Yep, I’ll check it out.
Legally Blonde 3- May 8: Plot unknown. Is this the year of the third movie coming out years after the second one or something? But sure, why not lol.
The Woman in the Window-May 15: An agoraphobic woman living alone in New York begins spying on her new neighbors, only to witness a disturbing act of violence. This is based on a book, has a very interesting premise and Amy Adams is always great.
Artemis Fowl- May 29: Artemis Fowl II (Ferdia Shaw), a young Irish criminal mastermind, kidnaps the fairy LEPrecon officer Captain Holly Short (Lara McDonnell) for ransom to fund the search for his missing father in order to restore the family fortune. Another movie I thought was coming out in 2019 but alas I guess not. Maybe I’ll actually reread the book now.
June
Wonder Woman 1984-June 5: Plot unknown. A sequel to the 2017 superhero film ‘Wonder Woman.’. I enjoy the first one, I don’t like it as much as other people, but I recognize how important it was because it is. This trailer didn’t do much for me, but I’ll still see it and maybe I’ll end up loving it.
Top Gun Maverick- June 26: After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete Mitchell is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. I’m not sure if I’ve seen the first one, at least in its entirety. So, I will make sure I watch that first, but I like Tom Cruise and the trailer for this was good.
July
Free Guy- July 3: A bank teller discovers that he’s an NPC inside a brutal, open world video game. I’m kind of sick of Ryan Reynolds and his whole schtick in movies lol, particularly comedy wise but I enjoyed the trailer. I think I laughed once or twice.
Jungle Cruise- July 24: Based on Disneyland’s theme park ride where a small riverboat takes a group of travelers through a jungle filled with dangerous animals and reptiles, but with a supernatural element. lol like Pirates of the Caribbean, this is based on a ride. I mean, Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson are enough to make at least interested.
Morbius- July 31: Biochemist Michael Morbius tries to cure himself of a rare blood disease, but he inadvertently infects himself with a form of vampirism instead. Soooo, I love Jared Leto, so I’ll be into anything he’s in BUT this movie is Sony’s second entry in their “Spider-Man universe” and I did not think Venom was good, so I don’t have a ton of hope for this. I mean, I have mixed feelings on Sony and Spider-Man… I just want Tom Holland to be able to play the character for a long as he wants and that the MCU can use him for as long as they want. GET ALONG YOU GUYS!
August
September
The King’s Man- Sept 18: As a collection of history’s worst tyrants and criminal masterminds gather to plot a war to wipe out millions, one man must race against time to stop them. I loved Kingsman The Secret Service. The Golden Circle was fun but not as good as it could have been. I was excited for a third one but we’re getting a prequel instead. *sighs* Sure, I like the franchise overall, so I’ll see it.
Last Night in Soho-Sept 25: A young girl, passionate in fashion design, is mysteriously able to enter the 1960s where she encounters her idol, a dazzling wannabe singer. But 1960s London is not what it seems, and time seems to fall apart with shady consequences. No idea, but I enjoy Edgar Wright and I like the leading actress so sure!
October
Death on the Nile- Oct 9: While on vacation on the Nile, Hercule Poirot must investigate the murder of a young heiress. Murder on the Orient Express was okay, so it’ll be interesting to see what this movie does but it seems to have a very nice cast.
The Witches- Oct 9: Based on Roald Dahl’s 1983 classic book ‘The Witches’, the story tells the scary, funny and imaginative tale of a seven-year-old boy who has a run in with some real-life witches! I’ve never seen the first adaptation with Angelica Houston, I will now lol. But I like Anne Hathaway so there’s a chance I’ll check it out.
November
Godzilla vs. Kong- Nov 20: As the gigantic Kong meets the unstoppable Godzilla, the world watches to see which one of them will become King of the Monsters. This is what we have been building up to! I liked Godzilla and I enjoyed Kong: Skull Mountain sooooo I’m interested to see what happens when these two creatures meet. They’re both considered to be good guys, right?
Raya and the Last Dragon- Nov 25: In a realm known as Lumandra, a re-imagined Earth inhabited by an ancient civilization, a warrior named Raya is determined to find the last dragon. There’s nothing to really go on yet with this, but it’s a Disney film. It has Awkwafina as a voice over and her voice is so annoying, but I’ll see the movie.
Escape Room 2- Nov 30: Plot Unknown. The first one was bad, but I did enjoy myself for the most part so sure.
December
Dune- Dec 18: Feature adaptation of Frank Herbert’s science fiction novel, about the son of a noble family entrusted with the protection of the most asset and most vital element in the galaxy. I literally know nothing about this novel or what this film will be about but Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya AND Oscar Isaac are in this movie, so I’m sold.
Uncharted- Dec 18: The story is a prequel to the games, starring Holland as a younger Drake, showing us details of how he came to meet and befriend Sully. I see a 2020 and a 2021 date, who knows but Tom Holland so lol. It’s based off a video game which I’ll play at some point. It’s been in development hell for a long time. I hope Tom Holland’s career outside of Spider-Man will be okay because this and Chaos Walking seem to have a ton of issues.
I’m sure there are movies that will pop up throughout the year that won’t be on this list, but I’ll probably add more as I discover more.
What movies are you anticipating this year? Let me know in the comments below!
